Therapy approaches we use with children and teens:

Neuroaffirming Approaches

Neuroaffirming approaches recognise and celebrate neurodiversity, such as Autism, ADHD, Specific Learning Difficulties, and other ways of thinking and experiencing the world. Rather than seeing differences as problems to be fixed, these approaches focus on understanding and supporting each person’s unique strengths and needs. Neuroaffirming therapy aims to reduce stigma, misunderstanding, and judgment, helping clients feel respected and valued for who they are. In our clinic, we are passionate about supporting neurodiverse individuals and families. Two of our clinicians (Psychologist Shanling Su and Provisional Psychologist Sophie Wendt) have specialised training backgrounds in educational and developmental psychology, who strive to create a safe, accepting space where everyone can thrive and feel empowered to embrace their authentic selves.

Child Play-based Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Child play-based interpersonal psychotherapy uses play as a therapeutic tool for children to express emotions, build social skills, and process experiences. Through guided play, children can work through challenges, strengthen relationships, and learn coping strategies in a safe and engaging environment.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a practical, goal-oriented approach that teaches people to identify and change unhelpful thoughts and behaviours. CBT is widely used for concerns such as anxiety, depression, and stress. Through structured sessions, individuals learn coping skills and strategies to manage challenges, improve mood, and build resilience. All of our experienced psychologists in the clinic have training background in CBT and are skilled in tailoring this approach to meet each client’s unique needs.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on helping individuals accept difficult thoughts and feelings rather than fighting with them. ACT uses mindfulness strategies to encourage living in the present moment and clarifying what truly matters to each person. By committing to actions aligned with personal values, people can move forward even when life is challenging. In our clinic, our psychologists Will Chesmond has a special interest in using ACT to help clients reconnect with their values, build resilience, and find meaning even in difficult circumstances. Will is passionate about empowering clients to live more fully and authentically, guiding them to make choices that reflect who they truly are and what they care about most.

Trauma-informed Interpersonal Psychotherapy

Trauma-informed Interpersonal Psychotherapy combines a focus on relationships with a sensitive awareness of how trauma can affect emotional well-being and connection with others. Being trauma-informed means recognising the profound impact that trauma can have on the brain, body, and sense of safety. It is crucial to work within a safe, supportive relational space, as feeling secure with the therapist is the foundation for healing and therapeutic progress. A strong therapeutic relationship not only helps clients feel understood and validated, but research shows it is one of the most important factors contributing to treatment effectiveness. In our clinic, we empathise deeply with the challenges trauma can bring and are committed to staying up to date with the latest trauma research, including neurodevelopmental findings. Our goal is to provide a safe and caring environment where clients can build trust, process their experiences, and move forward with greater resilience and well-being.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

EMDR is a structured therapy that uses guided eye movements to help people process and heal from traumatic memories. This approach has been shown to reduce the emotional impact of trauma and support recovery in a safe and controlled way. In our clinic, Clinical and Developmental Psychologist Shanling Su practises EMDR. Shanling is passionate about using EMDR to treat single-incident trauma and also to help children with autism or complex trauma regulate their emotions and process difficult experiences. She is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care that supports healing and resilience.

Narrative Therapy

Narrative Therapy encourages individuals to examine and reshape the stories they tell about themselves and their lives. By exploring alternative perspectives and meanings, people can discover new possibilities and strengths, leading to positive change. This approach is particularly valuable for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as it honours personal stories and meaning making within cultural contexts. Our clinic is proud to collaborate with the IUIH Institute for Urban Indigenous Health, supporting culturally sensitive and empowering therapeutic approaches for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. We provide culturally safe and sensitive assessment and therapy services to ensure all individuals feel respected, understood, and supported in their healing journey.
